The use of marked individuals is a fundamental procedure in field ecological studies of birds in the wild. The use of metal flipper bands in antarctic penguins contributed to produce new data
that improved the understanding of their basic biology concepts. Notwithstanding, in recent years it has been shown that metal flipper bands can increase natural mortality and energy consumption during swiming of taged birds. In this note we report the results of the experimental use of transponders to identify adult nesting Gentoo penguins. Our results indicate that the use of transponders allows unequivocal identification of marked birds, which recover from the procedures and continue incubation and do not show behavioral perturbation after effects. We conclude that the use of these devices is a viable alternative for the development of field ecology studies in Gentoo penguins.
