Actividad volcánica en Isla Decepción, Antártica, 1967

An aocount is given of the eruption that took place on Deception Island in December 1967. It took place as an explosion through four new craters, which expelled gases and pyroclasts, the latter being mostly of a juvenile type and of andesitic composition. 'This activity changed the morphology, originating a new small island, named Yelcho Island, and covered two thirds of the total area of Deception Island with a layer of ash and lapilli about 50 cm thick. lt is concluded that the energy liberated by the explosion was about 3.3 x 1023 ergs. The chemical composition of the material ejected falls within the range of variation which characterizes Deception Island (olivine basalts - oligoclase andesites). The parental magma may have been of the aluminous basaltic type with a higher alkali content than normal aluminous basaltic magma.
