Abstract
Part of a tafoflora (fossil flora) discovered by ARAYA and HERVE (1965) on the south west end of Byers Peninsula, Livingston Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica no previously recorded is here described and illustrated. FUENZALIDA (1965) assigned to this fossil flora to the Wealdean in the broadest sense. The following taxa have been identified: Cladophlebis cfr. patagonica Frenguelli, Gleichenites cfr. san martinii Halle, Taeniopteris sp., cfr. Ptilophyllum sp., cfr. Pseudoctenis sp., ? Mesodescolea sp., cfr. Ticoa sp., Araucarites cfr. baqueroensis Archangelsky, cfr. Ruflorinia sp., and Sphenopteris sp. Some forms which could correspond to Pachypteris sp. and ? Mesosingeria sp. are also present. Coniferopsida probably belonging to Podocarpaceae and remains of a flower of Williamsonia are recorded. After comparison with jurassic and cretaceous tafofloras specially from the Argentine Patagonia, a probable early cretaceous age is tentatively assigned to this tafoflora. The forms studied so far, indicate affinities with the fossil flora of the Baqueró formation of early cretaceous age. In the same sedimentary sequence, older unit according to VALENZUELA et al. (1971), there exists a fossil fauna belonging to titonianbarremian age GONZALEZ et al. (1970) and TAVERA (1970).
